Installing or uninstalling AMD Drivers

The purpose of this article is to walk a user through the steps to install and setup a new AMD driver to be used with zSpace.

AMD has two types of graphic cards, AMD Radeon and AMD FirePro series. Different drivers have different steps. For this reason, the instructions here are generic as possible. Some drivers packages may or may not include all of the below instructions. These instructions

Section 1. Verify current driver version

Read this article here on verifying the version of driver you are using. Drivers can be downloaded from here.

Section 2. Uninstall prior driver

You will now to remove the previous driver before installing the new driver

  1. Click the Windows Start Button and type programs and features. Click on the Programs and Features option that appears.
  2. In the list of installed programs, select AMD Catalyst Control Manager. This option may show up under many different names such as AMD Software or just AMD.
  3. Select Next.
  4. If you are given the option, select Express Uninstall All AMD Software and select Next. Newer AMD drivers by-pass this step and go directly to uninstalling the driver.
  5. It may take a few minutes but all AMD Software will be uninstalled.
  6. Select Finish or Restart now.
  7. It is recommended to reboot your computer two times before installing a new driver.

Section 3: Install new driver

AMD FirePro using Win10 with zSpace 300

  1. The file you downloaded is a zip file. Unzip everything and run Setup.exe.
  2. If you see a message, "Windows protected your PC", click on More info and Run anyway.
  3. You may have several options for drivers to install. Select the driver which is listed as local driver. In this case it is driver 16.50.2001.
  4. Click on Custom Install
  5. After reviewing the items which will be installed, click on the option on the right, Clean Install. Note, this is a new feature included with drover 21.19.384.0. Prior drivers will only give you the option to Install.
  6. Upon selecting Clean Install, you must also confirm to allow the PC to reboot as part of the installation. You may also be prompted by Windows to verify you are selecting to run this installer or install drivers from Advanced Micros Devices (AMD). Select yes to confirm or install to continue the installation.
  7. If your computer does not automatically restart or if you are asked if you would like to restart, restart the computer. 
  8. If you selected the Clean Install option, after the computer reboots and gets to the desktop, the driver installation will continue. It may take 45-60 seconds once back to the desktop for the driver installation to continue. 
  9. Once the installation completes, select Finish.

 

AMD FirePro driver using Win8.1 with zSpace 300 and zSpace STEM Teacher PC only.

  1. The file you downloaded is a zip file. Unzip everything and run Setup.exe.
  2. If you see a message, "Windows protected your PC", click on More info and Run anyway.
  3. Select Install. This will give a message you are "Installing" and may take several minutes to complete. During this process, your display may turn off and off many times.
  4. Select Restart Now and your computer will reboot.
  5. After the PC reboots, you may see the following error message. "https://secure.amd.com/di?VID1... File system error."
  6. This error message can be ignored.

For all other AMD drivers.

Driver installation varies from one driver to another.

  1. If the file you downloaded is a zip file, you may need to first unzip the everything then run the Setup.exe file. Otherwise simply run the file you downloaded.
  2. If you see a message, "Windows protected your PC", click on More info and Run anyway.
  3. Select Install. This will give a message you are "Installing" and will take about 30 seconds and you will be advanced to a Welcome screen.
  4. On the welcome screen, select Next.
  5. Select Install.
  6. Select Express and Next. The new driver will now be installed.
  7. After the driver has installed, select View Log and make each part of the driver installed successfully.
  8. Select Close.
  9. After the installation of the driver has completed, reboot the computer.

Section 4: Turning off automatic updates

This only applies older AMD FirePro drivers. If you are using the most recent zSpace 300 or zSpace STEM PC drivers you will not have the ability to turn off automatic updates. 

AMD drivers will automatically check for updates and display a message when a new driver version is available and asks if you would like to install it. It is recommended you do not automatically check for updates and stop new drivers from being installed.

  1. Right click on the windows desktop and select AMD Catalyst Control Center.
  2. Verify you are in advanced mode. In the upper right-hand corner of the window, select Preferences and Advanced View.
  3. Along the left column, select Information then Software Update.
  4. Uncheck any update checks as shown in the below screenshot.

  5. Close AMD Catalyst Control Center.

Section 5: Driver Settings

This only applies to AMD Radeon Drivers. AMD FirePro drivers do not require any additional settings after installing.

  1. Right click on the windows desktop and select AMD Catalyst Control Center.
  2. Verify you are in advanced mode. In the upper right-hand corner of the window, select Preferences and Advanced View.
  3. Along the left column select Gaming and 3D Application Settings.
  4. Look for Frame Rate Control and set Wait for Vertical Refresh to Always On.
  5. Set OpenGL Triple Buffering to On.
  6. Select Apply.
