This document explains the process in which zSpace, Inc. performs for setting up zSpace Teacher and Student Generation 2 STEM PCs (This is the Shuttle PC). Some steps are listed as optional but all steps are recommended. The same instructions can be followed for previous generations.

  1. Install Windows
  2. Install Shuttle System drivers. Drivers can be downloaded from here.
  3. Install all windows updates.
  4. (Optional) Turn off Windows updates
  5. Change User Account Control settings to never notify
    1. Click Windows start button and type “User Accounts”. Click on the “Change User Account Control Settings” option that appears.
    2. Move the slider the lowest setting, Never notify.
    3. Press Ok.
    4. Reboot Computer
  6. Install .NET Framework 3.5
    1. Click on Windows Start button and type “Programs and Features”. Select the Programs and Features option which appears under the search bar.
    2. Click Turn Windows on or off.
    3. Check .NET Framework (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)
    4. Select Ok.
    5. Reboot computer
  7. Install appropriate GPU driver:
  8. (Optional) In Catalyst Control Center, disable web content and driver update checks.
    1. Student PC
      1. Right click on Windows Desktop and select AMD Catalyst Control Center.
      2. In the upper right-hand corner, select Preferences and Advanced Mode.
      3. In the bottom of the screen, uncheck Allow Web Content.
      4. In the left side column select Information -> Software Update.
      5. In the center, panel uncheck any of the software packages.
      6. Select Apply
  9. In System Bios, disable USB 3.0.
    1. For every PC the steps taken to disable USB 3.0 is different. For zSpace STEM Generation 2 PC, follow the steps here: Disabling-USB-on-zSpace-STEM-Shuttle-PC
  10. Install zSpace System Software
    1. Be sure to perform Firmware Update when prompted.
  11. Install zSpace App Manager
    1. Student PC: Install all Apps except zView.
    2. Teacher PC: Install all Apps listed in the zSpace App Manager.
  12. Remove all extra shortcuts from Windows Desktop. Windows Desktop should only have Recycle Bin, Zone, and App Manager.
  13. Install zSpace EDU Server.
  14. (Optional) Install Cyber Science.
  15. Install Cyber Science Models
    1. Download all models for all versions: Cyber Science Model Pack
    2. Unzip the contents of that folder and place at:
      1. C:\ProgramData\CyberScience\csData
      2. C:\ProgramData\CyberScience\csModels
  16. Install VLC Media Player 2.2.1
    1. Add VLC Media Player icon to the taskbar and delete the desktop shortcut
    2. Launch VLC Media Player, go into settings - interface and select set up associations - save with default associations set.
    3. Turn off updates - go into settings - interface and under Privacy / Network Interaction uncheck Activate Updates Notifier
  17. Install Chrome Browser.
    1. Launch Chrome and set to be the default browser.
    2. Make Chrome full screen.
    3. Set the Home Page to
    4. Close Chrome
    5. Add Chrome icon to the Windows Task Bar and delete the desktop shortcut.
    6. Close Chrome
  18. Install Autodesk 123 Design
  19. Install Apple Bonjour
  20. Disable Windows Firewall. If Windows Firewall will be left on, Bonjour needs to be set to be allowed for Bonjour for both private and public networks. Additionally once EDU Server is installed EDU Server will need to be added to be allowed.
  21. Launch Zone and apply the following settings:
    1. Go into the Zone menu and set the following options:
      1. Option menu - full-screen mode checked
      2. zSpace Zone Settings
        1. Hide menu when locked
        2. Force full screen when locked
        3. Disable tile editing when locked
        4. Only run one app at a time
        5. Single click to launch files
    2. Add all of the start menu shortcuts for the following. For reference, view this article on adding shortcuts to Zone.
      1. zSpace Experience
      2. Newton’s Park
      3. Franklin’s Lab
      4. Studio
      5. Cyberscience (rename Launch Cyberscience zSpace to just Cyberscience zSpace)
      6. Leopoly 3D Designer
      7. Aquarium
      8. Missile Defense
      9. Planet Attack
      10. zSpace Tennis
      11. Autodesk 123 Design
      12. Chrome browser
    3. Once all shortcuts are added, lock zone with CTRL+L
    4. Test all shortcuts to make sure they launch from Zone come up full screen or fake full screen in front of Zone and exit cleanly back to Zone.
  22. (Optional) Setup zSpace windows theme
    1. Copy zSpace wallpaper to C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper.
    2. Right click on Windows Desktop and select personalize.
    3. Click Desktop Background.
    4. Select the zSpace wallpaper.
    5. Select Save Changes.
    6. Select Save Theme and name the theme zSpace.
  23. (Optional) Disable device auto-play
    1. Press Windows Start button and type Autoplay. Click Autoplay settings which appear under the search bar.
    2. Uncheck or change slider bar to be off for “User AutoPlay for all media and devices”.
  24. (Optional) Disable Windows notifications
    1. Windows 8: Press Windows Start button and type “notifications”. Select the Notifications Settings that appears under the search bar. Move the slider to be off for “Show app notifications”.
    2. Windows 7: Press Windows Start button and type “notifications”. Select Notification Area Icons”. Uncheck “Always show all icons and notifications”.
  25. (Optional) Disable Windows 10 upgrade nag. This will block the Windows 10 upgrade nags that result from a sneaky Windows update that enables the nag.
    1. Right click and run as admin GWX removal.reg.
  26. (Optional) Name the C:\ volume zSpace by opening up the file manager, right-clicking the C: drive and selecting properties. In the General tab, you can change the name, click apply to save.
  27. (Optional) Disable Windows Error reporting.
    1. Right-click and run as admin Disable Error Reporting.bat
  28. Power management settings - zSpace Systems are optimally configured so that the machine never sleeps and the CPU runs at 100% power at all times. Please configure power management as follows in the Windows Control Panel Power Options:
    1. Click Windows Start button and type Power options. Click the Power Options below the search bar.
    2. Choose the High-Performance plan and then to the right of the plan click Change plan settings.
    3. Set turn off the display to 30 minutes.
    4. Set Put the computer to sleep to Never.
    5. Select Change advanced power settings.
    6. Under Wireless Adapter Settings - Power Saving Mode setting should be Maximum Performance
    7. Under Sleep
      1. Sleep after - Never
      2. Allow hybrid sleep - On
      3. Hibernate after - None
      4. Allow wake timers - Disable
    8. Under USB - USB Selective suspend setting - Disabled
    9. Under Power buttons and lid
      1. Power button action - Shutdown
      2. Sleep button action - do nothing
    10. Under PCI Express - Link State Power Management Setting - Off
    11. Under Processor power management
      1. Minimum processor state - 100%
      2. System cooling policy - Active
      3. Maximum processor state - 100%
    12. Under ATI Graphics Power Settings
      1. ATI Powerplay Settings - Maximize Performance
    13. Click Apply or OK to save power settings
